There’s something undeniably Hamptons about the unexpected. Oysters on ice beneath crisp white umbrellas, framed by overflowing hydrangea blooms. A champagne cart sparkled in the sea breeze, just steps from the shore. And in the case of Jocelyn and Matt Morgan’s wedding at the Quogue Field Club—a duck, named Doug.

Doug splits time between Jocelyn and Matt’s Brooklyn apartment—complete with a private tub—and sun-soaked weekends in Quogue. Days are spent gliding through the pool (only if Matt’s swimming too), cruising on the boat, lounging during TV marathons, and darting through the house in playful standoffs with Jocelyn’s cat.

For what might be a deal breaker for most couples is, for them, a lifestyle.

Doug arrived early in their relationship – a few days old, barely staying afloat in their backyard pool in Quogue. From the kitchen window, Jocelyn caught sight of the tiny duckling. Within seconds Matt, a veterinary surgeon, was sprinting across the lawn. It was part Baywatch, part East End rescue as Matt dove in to scoop the duckling from the water just in time.

Jocelyn turned to Matt and asked, “Now what?” His answer became legend: “We have a duck now.”

It’s almost as if Doug knew whose pool to fall into —a couple that meets surprise not with hesitation, but with open arms and an effortless kind of care. What began as a rescue became something far more meaningful—an unspoken bond, the start of a story no one could have predicted.

After nursing Doug back to health with quiet swims, warm towels, and gentle care, Jocelyn and Matt did what they believed was best. It was time for Doug to be released, and there was no spot more beautiful in their town of Quogue than the wildlife refuge. A perfect home for Doug.

Twice they tried to release Doug. And twice Doug returned.

“Doug flew a couple hundred yards and made a big circle around the pond, then landed with a bunch of other ducks,” Matt said. “When Doug saw us leaving, he ran back to us and sat down by my feet.”

“That was it— Doug chose us,” Jocelyn said. Some bonds are simply too strong for nature to undo.

What followed wasn’t just companionship—it was connection. While Matt was away serving in the Army Reserve, Doug stayed close to Jocelyn’s side, a quiet presence during long evenings of wedding planning and floral decisions. So when guests received a wedding invitation adorned with a soft blue watercolor of Doug—elegant, understated, and perfectly East End—it felt entirely fitting. After all, those who had been at Doug’s first birthday celebration already knew: Doug was family.

“All my friends know Doug,” Matt said. “The first thing they asked was, ‘Is Doug coming to the wedding?’” Jocelyn laughed. “At this point, the whole town knows about the duck.”

But Doug’s role in their lives went far beyond local legend.

In many ways, Doug’s place in their life mirrored their own story—unexpected, steadfast, and deeply rooted in Quogue. Between deployments, clinical work, and weekend escapes from the city, the three of them had built a rhythm that was entirely their own. They weren’t just planning a wedding—they were shaping a life filled with loyalty, laughter, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.

So of course, when the big day arrived, Doug had a starring role. In a small wagon pulled by Matt’s nephew, sporting a satin bow and a sign that read “Best Bird,” Doug made a grand entrance. Guests reached for their phones. Heads turned. A few jaws dropped.

The ceremony was timeless and deeply personal, with soft blue accents, sweeping views, and close friends and family gathered in a place full of meaning. And while every detail reflected Jocelyn and Matt’s story, Doug’s sweet stroll down the aisle added a moment of unexpected joy no one will forget.

The best love stories aren’t always scripted. Sometimes they flutter in uninvited, land in your pool, and never leave. And when two people choose—without pause—to love each other and a duck?

That’s not just commitment. That’s love, perfectly paired and a little unexpected.
